Star

When I built the Truncated Icosahedron, I realized that the same technique could be used to make many other shapes. It was around the time In Sweden ( where I lived when I designed the star ) that many folks put an advent star in their windows, so it was not hard to find inspiration … just a matter of choice about how many points the star should have.

The model is just under half a meter in diameter, has 1260 parts, including 476 pins, and weighs about 980 grams. Just like with the paper advent stars, this one you can fold open and ‘flat’.

You can find a design for a support for the star here. The support has the possibility to have a LED bulb installed.

Version history

From February 2019, the downloadable design consisted of an Ldraw file, which is not available anymore.

On December 24th 2024, the file was replaced by a pdf. The .pdf has a slightly improved version of the star. The Ldraw version could not be completely folded due to a mistake. The .pdf version can and it uses friction-less pins in most of the hinges, so it can more easily fold in and out.
